You know what it's like. You're working hard and decide to take a cheeky break to go on facebook for a bit to unwind for a moment and check out your news feed, see what others have been up to and comment and whatnot and then you fuck off again to get on with what you're supposed to be doing (well ideally anyway) feeling ready to work again after that (small) break. Recently though you may have been seeing this come up on your news feed:
"
Change Your facebook profile picture to a cartoon character from your childhood and
invite all your friends to do the same, for the NSPCC. Until Monday
(December 6th), there should be no human faces on Facebook, but an
invasion of memories. This is a campaign to stop violence against children."
There should be no human faces on facebook!? Er...why? I doubt its photos of human faces that is the root cause of these kids being mistreated by their abusive parents. If you want to do something to stop child violence, do something about it. Dont make out you're doing something about it by changing your profile picture to a cartoon character as if it'll make a difference.
Now I had something like this as my recent facebook status and a response saying 'It's to show your support for the cause'. What as if I don't support the NSPCC's work? Yeah because I am refusing to chaneg my profile picture to a cartoon for a bit and have highlighted the ridiculousness of this campaign I'm CLEARLY supporting the parents who beat up their kids, arent I?
Another said it was all about raising awareness. My comeback to that I think it has the effect of satisfying some people's small appetite to help others so they dont do that something they might have done otherwise which would have actually made a difference. To which the person replied saying 'Ah well said but perhaps if it inspires just one person, that otherwise wouldn't have done a thing then perhaps its worth it'. Inspires them to do what? Make another pointless fb campaign which could have an overall negative effect? Genius!
We have to get told what to do by our parents, teachers, girlfriends/boyfriends, mates, and/or our bosses at work throughout our lives. There is almost always someone there in our lives to tell us what to do. That's enough. I don't want facebook campaigns to try and tell me or anyone else what to do in one of the few domains where we have total control to do what we want.
Oh and welcome to the Blog. The latter part of the name of the blog is actually a little dig at the blog itself cos it will be far from philosophical most probably. And the 'proper' bit is just really to make it obvious that I'm not taking things too seriously. Hope you enjoy this blog and let me know if you're enjoying it or not because if you don't, chances are I will stop bothering pretty soonish haha.
